I have waffled most of my adult life on my stance towards capital punishment. As I have aged I have become a lot less judgmental. Lately I have fallen towards the belief that capital punishment should be banned. To be honest I could argue from both sides quite easily. Of note, term capital comes from the latin word captitalis “of the head”. Which is why this punishment originally was used by cutting off the head.
However, this post isn’t about my views or the history of capital punishment. Recently, Jose Rivera, a 22 year old prison guard in Atwater was killed by a guy serving life in prison. My question to anyone out there who doesn’t belief in the death penalty is, What’s a suitable punishment for someone who kills an innocent prison guard while serving a life term in prison? Life in prison can’t be doubled. Multiple life term punishment seem asinine.
